AIGUA5G

Transforming Water Management with

AI, 5G and Advanced Radar Sensing

Smarter and More Sustainable Water Infrastructure

AIGUA5G is an ambitious research and innovation project focused on accelerating the digital transformation of water management through the convergence of 5G communications, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), Edge Computing and advanced sensing technologies.

As water infrastructures become increasingly critical to environmental sustainability and urban resilience, the project aims to provide operators with intelligent tools capable of monitoring assets in real time, improving operational efficiency and enabling predictive maintenance. By combining connected sensors, autonomous systems and data analytics, AIGUA5G supports more reliable, secure and sustainable management of water networks.

Within this framework, radar technology plays a key role by providing robust, contactless measurements that are unaffected by lighting conditions or many environmental factors. This enables continuous monitoring of infrastructure and assets while reducing maintenance requirements and improving system reliability.

Objectives

AIGUA5G pursues several technological objectives to advance next-generation digital water infrastructure:

  • Research and validate innovative technologies based on 5G Standalone (SA), Artificial Intelligence, IoT, radar sensing and Edge Computing.
  • Improve operational efficiency through real-time monitoring, automation and data-driven decision-making.
  • Enhance infrastructure resilience by enabling predictive maintenance and continuous condition monitoring.
  • Develop advanced sensing solutions capable of operating reliably in demanding industrial environments.
  • Strengthen cybersecurity and secure communications across connected devices and critical infrastructure.
  • Demonstrate integrated use cases that combine communications, sensing and AI to optimize water management processes.

A4Radar’s Role

As a consortium partner, A4Radar contributes its expertise in high-frequency radar sensing, embedded signal processing and Artificial Intelligence algorithms.

The company develops advanced radar-based solutions for non-contact monitoring applications, providing highly accurate measurements while minimizing maintenance and installation complexity. Within AIGUA5G, A4Radar focuses on:

  • Development and validation of radar sensors for intelligent water infrastructure monitoring.
  • Research into radar-based flow and level measurement technologies.
  • AI-powered processing algorithms for extracting meaningful information from radar signals.
  • Edge processing capabilities for real-time analysis and autonomous operation.
  • Integration of radar data with connected IoT and 5G ecosystems to support advanced monitoring and predictive maintenance applications.

By combining radar sensing with intelligent analytics, A4Radar helps create more efficient, resilient and sustainable infrastructure capable of supporting future smart water networks.

Financing and Consortium

AIGUA5G is developed by a multidisciplinary consortium bringing together industrial and academic partners with complementary expertise in communications, artificial intelligence, sensing technologies and water management.

The consortium includes Fivecomm, Universitat Politècnica de València, Universitat de València, EMIVASA, EMIMET and A4Radar.

The project is funded by the Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico y la Innovación (CDTI) and supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, promoting collaborative research aimed at accelerating technological innovation and digital transformation in strategic sectors.
